International cooperation at Tay Bac University
International cooperation is one of the strategic tasks of Tay Bac University, aimed at improving the quality of training and research and raising the University’s standing. Its central focus is developing human resources for the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, while expanding relations with universities, organisations and enterprises in Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United States, the Russian Federation and many other countries.
A second home for students from Northern Laos
Tay Bac University is a “common home” for hundreds of students from nine northern provinces of the Lao PDR. Students first take a preparatory Vietnamese language course, then study undergraduate and master’s programmes alongside Vietnamese students, with comprehensive support for their studies, daily life, residence procedures and cultural and sports activities.
The study pathway for Lao students
1. Preparatory Vietnamese
Learn Vietnamese and become familiar with the culture and the learning environment.
2. Enrolment
Admission to undergraduate and master’s degree programmes.
3. Study and training
Study together with Vietnamese students, supported by academic advisers and lecturers.
4. Graduation
Receive the degree and return home to serve the country.
Support for Lao students
Residence and visa procedures
Guidance on visa extensions and temporary residence registration, in coordination with the Immigration Division of Son La Provincial Police.
Dormitory
Safe and secure accommodation in the University’s residential area.
Lao Students’ Representative Board
Connects Lao students with the University; organises Lao New Year (Boun Pi Mai), Lao National Day and cultural and sports exchanges.
Management and counselling
The Office of Political Affairs and Student Management, the Office of Science, Technology and International Cooperation and the faculties jointly provide management and counselling.

Training
Training international students; joint and curriculum development; support for the Lao – Thai Language Teacher Education programme.
Academic exchange
Exchange of lecturers, students and volunteer experts; strengthening governance and foreign-language capacity.
Research and technology transfer
Agriculture and forestry projects, indigenous crops, coffee, climate change adaptation and community livelihoods.
International scientific conference
